This is our latest field experiment at sugarcane grower Troy App’s farm at Maroochy River. Here we are testing how different nutrient supply systems affect the emissions of greenhouse gases from soil that contribute significantly to climate change.
Maren is studying how animal manure, compost and sorbers can be formulated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Various mixtures are tested to see whether it is possible to recycle nutrients from waste materials and boost crop growth without incurring high emissions.
Monica’s project focuses on the effect of legumes as alternative to nitrogen fertilisers. Legumes such as soybeans are a potential source of nitrogen for sugarcane and we need to find out how such systems can be optimised.
